This stunning hillside U.S. Army dental clinic makes the most of the view overlooking Monterey Bay.

Description

RLF’s goal for the Presidio Dental Clinic was to provide a relaxing and pleasant experience for patients and staff by providing open, naturally lit spaces with panoramic views and convenient, functional procedure spaces. The design solution takes full advantage of the facility’s coastal location by maximizing every opportunity to capture views of Monterey Bay. Expansive wall-to-wall windows provide open, light-filled spaces that are warm and appealing. The stucco and glass structure rests on a concrete base that is partially embedded into the hillside. A sweeping curved roof extends above the one-story facility, emphasizing orientation to the bay and creating a large, open lobby and waiting space. To minimize mixing different types of traffic within the facility, RLF organized the building into four distinct zones: public, administration, treatment and building services.

PE, Senior Project Manager, USACE Sacramento District

RLF was extremely cooperative and sensitive to the End Users' requirements, in particular during interviews with the dentist. ... The team was presented a difficult, hilly, and constricted site location.RLF's design solution resulted in a building orientation that provided stunning views of Monterey Bay from the lobby/waiting area. This serves as a calming feature for potentially anxious patients (who enjoys going to the dentist?) and an enjoyable, relaxing atmosphere for everyone in this space. Several of the staff dentists and the facility manager personally experessed their appreciation of the completed clinic during my subsequent follow-up visits to the completed operating clinic.
