RLF used evidence-based design to incorporate patient- and staff-centric amenities into one of the most advanced cancer-treatment centers in the country.

Description

The University of Florida (UF) Heath Cancer Center Orlando is a combined inpatient and outpatient facility attached to the hospital core at Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC). UF Health Cancer Center Orlando houses five treatment vaults and a new proton vault on the ground floor. The facility consists of two floors of clinical space, one floor of administrative/conference/education space, one floor of chemotherapy treatment and five floors of private inpatient beds (150 total). It also houses integrated medical retail, counseling and education spaces.

The UF Cancer Center is equipped with the most advanced cancer-treatment technology in the nation, including the Super Dimension Bronchus system, sterotactic body radiotherapy, PET Scan and MammoSite. This facility was one of the first in the nation to offer Novalis Shaped Beam Surgery, an advanced radio surgery technology, and the first center in the world to offer helical tomotherapy, the most advanced form of image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy.

Design

The tower features sweeping bars of brick and glass anchored by a two-story plinth of earth and water. The overall massing is bold and monumental, harmonizing with the existing hospital while introducing new delicate and transparent elements to enhance the overall aesthetic.

Inside, a three-story atrium brings in natural light, offering views into the garden for visitors and patients. Grand stairs and landscaped terraces connect the garden on the third level to the main thoroughfare, welcoming the city and softening the building's mass. Concealed below are linear accelerator vaults.

A 15,780 square-foot proton therapy treatment facility was added in 2016 and sits adjacent to the cancer center along the main thoroughfare. The building is aesthetically designed to seamlessly blend into the campus while showcasing state-of-the-art technology through LED-lit glass wings surrounding the vault mass. This unique facility is the only one of its kind in Central Florida and one of five in the state. It allows for precise targeting of tumors with elevated doses of radiation, thereby minimizing damage to healthy tissue significantly.
