RLF’s modern surveying methods and creative field measurements supported the renovation of an iconic Naval Academy's copper-sheathed dome.
Description
RLF provided design for the full exterior renovation and repair of the historic Naval Academy chapel, a copper-clad dome that highlights the Annapolis townscape and is a prominent component of the Naval Academy’s designation as a National Historic Landmark.
Instead of traditional field measurements, RLF completed a full 3D laser scan of the 150-foot-high dome using drones and importing the data into Revit. This modern survey was further enhanced with up-close visual inspections using a team of craftsman who carefully rappelled down the dome. These efforts guided the team toward the best possible solution: a design that significantly reduced the amount of copper to be replaced and helped RLF gain approval more quickly from the Maryland Historical Trust.
Project wasn't seeking third-party sustainability certification, however sustainable principles were considered throughout, including energy performance, material reuse, and regional availability of new materials
