Every minute is a life: RLF delivers a critical transformation for acute patient care

Description

In a rapid response to the COVID-19 pandemic, RLF’s planning and design specialists swiftly developed several viable solutions for augmenting medical facility capacity in South Florida. In a design-build partnership with general contractor Robins & Morton, RLF’s multi-disciplinary team of medical planners, architects and engineers worked around the clock in double shifts to transform 250,000 SF of exhibit hall space at the Miami Beach Convention Center into an alternate care site to treat acute care patients. This retrofit project installed 450 patient beds and 50 isolation pods and included surge capacity for additional patients without interruption of service. The team delivered this critical project to the client, USACE Jacksonville, in 13 days — one day ahead of the contractual due date.

Strategized components of this complex project included space planning, circulation routes, logistical services, patient care planning, general care patient pod design, critical care negative pressure pod design and engineered building system solutions. These planning efforts supported the overarching design emphasis of patient isolation, infection control, fire protection and life safety. Medical military planning and design expertise were critical components of the project’s success; however, the commitment and synergy of the project team was the true momentum. RLF’s established industry partnerships enabled quick mobilization of a COVID task force team and rapid coordination across disciplines.

An American flag was hung front and center at the site, reminding the hardworking project team of the nobleness of their shared purpose. On April 20, one day early, the proud team handed over a completed field hospital to the Army. Humbled and honored to have had the opportunity to serve, the team stood back with a shared hope: that this creation would never need to be used. The RLF team's motto, “Every minute is a life,” fueled the mission, encouraged resilience, and even today reminds us that a united purpose can be the impetus behind a team accomplishing almost anything.
