Multi-phased project supporting the mission-critical functions of "Fighter Town East."

Description

Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort is located in the heart of the South Carolina low country and is among the United States military's most important and historically colorful installations. The installation serves as the base of operations to Fleet Marine Force (FMF) tenant units of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and 2nd Marine Logistics Group. Marine Aircraft Group 31 is the primary tenant command and consists of seven fighter attack squadrons, which fly and maintain all active-duty East Coast Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornets, an F-35B Fleet Replacement Squadron, and includes Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 31. MCAS Beaufort's nickname is "Fighter town East."

This multi-phased project supports an F-35B Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) training squadron, the Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 502 (VMFAT-502), as well as legacy aircraft at MCAS Beaufort. The project consists of a 108,154 SF Type 1 Aircraft Maintenance Hangar with high, nine-bay hangar space, a shop and maintenance area, and a number of secured enclaves; a 12,250 SF Operational Support Facility-Shop Annex; a 176,431 SF three-story parking structure with 500 spaces and two entry/egress points; and improvements to the hangar apron, which connects the hangar to the existing aircraft parking apron. This includes 20 new sunshade structures for 20 parked aircraft.

The complexity of scope and the project's timing for delivery during the height of the pandemic made for a highly complex effort. RLF's longstanding working relationship with Bamforth Engineers + Surveyors supported efficient collaboration, enabling the project team to work closely and expeditiously with the installation to gain consensus through multiple environmental issues, regulatory requirements, and security design complications. To ensure engaged participation during COVID, RLF persisted with remote coordination efforts through a virtual platform to achieve meaningful reviews and timely delivery.
