This stunning hillside U.S. Army dental clinic makes the most of the view overlooking Monterey Bay.
Description
RLF’s goal for the Presidio Dental Clinic was to provide a relaxing and pleasant experience for patients and staff by providing open, naturally lit spaces with panoramic views and convenient, functional procedure spaces. The design solution takes full advantage of the facility’s coastal location by maximizing every opportunity to capture views of Monterey Bay. Expansive wall-to-wall windows provide open light-filled spaces that are warm and appealing. The stucco and glass structure rests on a concrete base that is partially embedded into the hillside. A sweeping curved roof extends above the one-story facility emphasizing orientation to the bay and creating a large, open lobby and waiting space. RLF was careful to minimize mixing different types of traffic within the facility, developing the building in four distinct zones: public (lobby, reception and waiting), administration (offices and support areas), treatment (dental treatment rooms, dental laboratory, sterilization, prosthetics, radiology and medical support spaces) and building services (mechanical and electrical rooms establishing the basic organization of the building.
