US Navy Quality of Life Facilities

LOC: NAS 1- Sigonella, Italy | SRVCS: A/E/I

At Sigonella, the RLF team provided an award-winning design for our Armed Forces that not only transformed their working environment, but also transformed their image within the community. The project recapitalized of a large portion of the base that had been adapted piecemeal from “temporary” World War II-era facilities. It included demolishing thirty-nine facilities and consolidating scattered activities into seven new buildings – security building, chapel and religious education building, community building, administration building, club and enlisted dining facility, as well as two central energy plants.

Inspired by the surrounding topography, designers provided a distinct design reflecting the character of the environment while instilling a sense of identity and pride for the base. The architecture reflects its Mediterranean locale featuring exterior cement plaster walls, punched windows and clay tile roofing. Large stone-paved piazzas, bridges, walkways and grand entryways given an open and flowing impression to the newly developed campus. Local materials, such as terracotta roof tiles and marble staircases, give the buildings a distinct Italian flavor. Completed in twenty-five phases and sub-phases of temporary and permanent construction, the project was completed under schedule and under budget, creating an environment that exceeded all expectations.
