US Air Force Replacement Hospital

LOC: Spangdahlem AB, Germany | GSF: 76,290 | SRVCS: A/E/I

The design of the new outpatient medical complex at Spangdahlem creates a modern facility that successfully merges medical mission with sustainable concepts in response to its environment and surrounding topography. Combining sleek contemporary lines with stucco, stone, metal and glass curtain wall, the form is split apart and rotated to follow the natural curvilinear contours of the site. Two separate wings connect with a transparent glass lobby surrounding a landscaped internal courtyard. This placement creates views into and from the building capturing man-made healing gardens, as well as surrounding pastures and farmland. Conservation techniques addressing water usage, air quality and efficient mechanical systems, along with the incorporation of a green roof, all contribute to the project’s LEED sustainability goals.
