New VA Medical Center Orlando
The new Veterans Affairs Medical Center uses stately architecture and critical planning elements to create a world-class healthcare campus that honors and delivers the best comprehensive medical care to veterans throughout Central Florida. Located within the emerging “Medical City” at the Lake Nona development in Orlando, the campus accommodates approximately 1.2 million-sq.-ft. of facilities including a 134-bed hospital, 120-bed nursing home, residential rehabilitation, diagnostic and treatment beds, multi-speciality care, chapel, support and administration areas.
The project addresses all aspects of a fully functioning modern healthcare campus. Facilities emphasize clinical adjacencies and patient-friendly amenities such as single patient rooms designed for family interaction, as well as integrated technologies to support quality care and education. Careful site planning maximizes healing views of natural waterways while keeping high volume areas close to the main roadway for easy access and parking. The hospital and clinic connect by a glass, steel and concrete atrium topped by a large sweeping roof that expands the entire length of the complex. The “super roof” aids in wayfinding while collecting rainwater and housing solar panels along its entire length.
