Florida Hospital Cancer Institute

LOC: Orlando, Florida | GSF: 190,000-New / 40,000-Ren. | SRVCS: A/E/I

The Florida Hospital Cancer Institute offers comprehensive, state-of-the-art, oncology treatment, research, education and support services to approximately 3,800 patients each year, making it one of the largest and busiest cancer centers in the Southeast. The center incorporates education, radiation therapy, medical oncology and research in one building, with the top level of the facility providing a hotel-type atmosphere for patients and families when they must travel considerable distances for health care or stay more than one day to receive services.

The design uses an innovative geometric façade to create a sense of movement to the site. The west entrance is enhanced by terracing visually extending the landscaped entrance plaza and creating a transitional element between existing and new buildings. The project is an excellent example of functional, efficient and cost effective design, as it met the owner’s program for a previous freestanding design at a savings of almost $20,000,000.
